myself and gregwwr had a really good day out yesterday in the estuary
6 anglers in total aboard
we set off at 6 am the weather was lovely in canvey, but as we steamed out there was quite a bit of swell due to a light easterly wind.
we steamed for 2 hours and started fishing
the first mark never produced much just a few small whiting and some decent sized doggies, so after a couple of hours we moved to a different place.
rigs used by me were 4/0 pennel and 3 hook boom rig size 1 hooks
bait was squid, herring and blacks.
greg got into the thornies first, he had 6 i think, mostly males, all females were returned.
i was just about to change my 3 hook rig when i got a clonking bite, reeled into it and it felt like i was dragging up the seabed !!!!!!!
got it to the surface....a lovely female thorney about 9lb !!!!!!!!!
i was well proud of my knot tying skills at this point, but must remember for future boat trips to remove shockleaders as it was a bit worrying as it approached the top eye on the rod, didnt want to lose the fish after dragging it up.
about an hour later i had another, a male about 8lb on my pennel rig, he came home for tonights tea !!!!!!!!
to say i am happy is an understatment, my first ever thorneys, yippeeeeeeeeee
not monsters, but well happy
total tally on the boat was
19 thorneys between 5-10 lb
1 x small starry smut
1 x dab
20 odd whiting
loads and loads of doggies to about 2.5 lb
a nice days fishing with a nice bunch of guys....bring on the summer
sadly no pics cos my camera got wet and would not work
sunday 10th april on bobs boat the carpe diem
