Hi first of all a wetsuit are only good for the warm summer weather, if you went out now in a wetsuit you will be putting your life in danger you NEED a drysuit, yes I know they are expencive, but you really do need one. Next up a VHF radio and you need to do a course on how to use one, flares very good to have red and orange, the biggest safety issue with kayak fishing is capsizing all very easy to do, so you must practise re-entry over and over again until it is bomb proof.
If I were you find someone to go out with that knows what he/shes doing it is all very well say I can swim and what's there to know about paddleing, trust me I DO know what I'm talking about.
I'm not trying to pinch members, but Angling Afloat in a dedicated website for kayak fishing join and you will find someone in your area that will help you out.
