i've never tried it mate but a few boys on here use a 35mm film canister on top of their weight, drill a few holes in it and hey presto a homemade feeder filled with mackeral, bread, mashed worms etc

When I was a bit younger I used to groundbait with chopped up mackrel heads and guts by filling a mesh bag with it a nd giving it a liberal coating of pilchard oil. I placed the meshed bag and it's contents under a large stone and waited for the tide to come in. Then cast at the spot where my rubby dubby was. Only thing , on a bad day expect your fair share of crabs.

I guess its down to what fish you want to target.
I have used it for close range fish like Rockling and Scad.

Yes groundbaiting does work.
There are loads of different methods that you can use. I personally use a large feeder that I cast out or I use carp pellets that I catapault out over the area where I am fishing.
I have also tried slow melt pva stocking.
If you havn't got a film can you can buy inline feeders from tackle shops.
Just a suggestion if you use Rabbi's onion sack method attach a length of line to a plastic bottle and tie it to the bag. When the tide comes in the bottle acts as a marker float.
