red gurnard - spinning?

went down to knab rock - swansea on monday evening and two of us blanked not even a knock between us - but my mate got itchy fingers and started fishing with a lure and picked up a tidy sized red gurnard is this unusual as i have never heard of a gurnard being caught on the spin - so to say?

We have them on mackeral feathers in the past, more often than not near the bottom. They are predatory & will go for sandeels, but ive not heard of one (till now) caught on a spinner.
