Line backing can be any old line that you have.
It is used when you have new line that doesn't fill the spool and backing is used to build up the new line to about one eigth inch below the lip of the spool. The backing is never used as it never sees daylight.

thats great, thanks..

it does then raise the question of, why is the spool so deep?

Perhaps to hold the 400 yds of line required when mere mortals use the new Abu Atlantic rod with a gentle overhead lob to achieve vast distances which previously we could only dream about........... >:) >:) >:)

Some reels are designed for heavier line in which case a spool of the same would fill the reel.

I have 3 Albacore reels for deep sea and shark fishing and it would take 875 yd of 80lb mono to fill one of them, 650 yd of 50lb mono to fill another and 670 yd of 30lb to fill the other.

The point I am trying to make is that since the introduction of superfine braid it would cost an absolute fortune to fill any of them with braid and that is where backing comes in.
