Bring on crabs

Post by Stiggy »

Hi all,

So having been fishing for years and realised (finally) that nothing beats peelers, I've decided to collect some of my own. Now i know what to look for but living in Southampton where the turnover is high its hard to find peelers. However hard back crabs are easy to find and having done some research I thought I may have a go at bringing them on.

So i popped out 2 weeks ago and collected about 20 crabs of various sizes, kept them in a plastic crate and every day I washed them out and replaced the water with fresh salt water.

Nothing, absolutly nothing happened, not one started to peel.

Am i wasting my time?

If anybody has done this with any success can they please give me a few pointers.

Thanks, Stiggy

My suspicion is that you're wasting your time. Crabs peel infrequently as they they do so to grow bigger. If you are keeping your hardbacks, chances are that they have already recently peeled so not due a peel for a while or they are not getting enough food for growth which will reduce the frequency of peeling. Would be happy to be proved wrong, but these are my gut instincts. I'd let them go and continue the search....

the answer might be to fatten them up
feed them take aways and beer then they will be ready to peel in no time :D
