Larger Spurdog & Thornbacks at Loch Etive..Bait & Ho

Post by Esskie » Wed Nov 03, 2010 10:43 pm

Hi there,
I'm fortunate enough to have a day's boat fishing planned on Etive in a couple of weeks and wouldn't mind trying to hook into a decent spurdog or thornback ray.

As far as bait for goes I know sandeel is good for for rays and fresh mackerel & squid both working well for spurdogs?.

Is it a case of big bait = big fish and what size of hook could any of you guys recommend please?

I've got a few sets of Hokkai traces here from size 2/0 to 4/0 which I've heard work well on Etive?, also a couple of big pirks.....a ling maybe or more likely a snagged pirk lol......although it is a pretty sandy, clean bottom

Any advice of targeting the bigger spurdogs is greatly appreciated please

Best Regards, Andy
