I have used whole sardines for pike but they are extremely soft and are difficult to mount and cast.

i think the word 'difficult' is a bit of a understatement..lol..never again

For pike fishing I use a wire trace with two treble hooks, mount the sardine while it is still nearly frozen then use a casting clip to cast. I can't imagine a whole one staying on in the sea.

Use Carp p.v.a netting after lightly elastic binding them...........JOLI :D
