does anyone have any ideas on how to DIY a hand held reel for boat fishing?

Well you need a means of holding the device firmly with your left hand whilst winding with your right (assuming that you are right handed). Many years ago when I was a cash poor teenager I was offered the use of a boat in Christchurch Harbour. Somoone gave me a couple of hooks and a bit of nylon line but then I had to fix something up. Eventually I found an old scooter wheel and took the tyre off so that I could wind the line onto it. Then I screwed a small wooden knob on near the outer edge in order to turn it, guess you have got the picture by now.....
Anyway, to my utter amazement after about 1/2 hour I hooked and caught a very respectable silver eel which mother cooked us for dinner LOL.
