A closed face reel like the old Abu 500 range or newer 700 range gives better control of the line loops when its leaving the spool when casting out. Stops the chance of the wind causing loops of line to blow around the open bale arm like it can on a conventional fixed spool which can lead to crackoff,s.
Also makes it easier to control the line when trotting a float down a river. Still not as good as a good centrepin for rivers though. I always have my 506 and 704 with me for river float fishing.
They were origonally designed for spin fishing with light lures and lines in windy conditions.
