newbie- Need a little help choosing a rod and reel

ok, that is helpful thanks. What about the casting weight recommended for each rod, what does that actually mean? can you go outwith it?

The casting weight is what they think will get the best casting distance from the rod and actually what usually works best is somewhere around the middle of the two weights quoted. Thus I have a couple of Abu Garcia 14 ft beach casters which are rated 3 to 7 ozs and I find that a 5 oz sinker usually gives the best result - up to 130 yds in my case. I have never tried a 7 oz sinker with them but Abu are telling me that the rod could handle it comfortably if I chose.
