Just noticed the easiest tip of all hadnt been mentioned on here and that is to apply your thumb just as the weight hits the water. The reel will continue spinning after this point if you dont stop it and therfor continue feeding off line. If the rest of the line isnt going anywhere then it will birds nest!

How do you do that at night mate when many of us around the Solent do our fishing?

Good point. It takes time and practise at night to know when your weight is about to hit the water. Timing is cricticle when trying to avoid those dreaded overuns
