Yes, good observation eccles. Those Mackellow vids show this abrupt change of direction, and as all you students of harmonic motion will know, acceleration is a maximum as the pendulum swings back. Easy peasy. The complicated thing is why I can't do it in a straight line.

Ah well one has to remember that the sinker will tend to go where you are looking when you deliver the cast, provided you release the line at the right time - practice practice. Also with a fixed spool reel (like what I use) the drag should be fairly well screwed down so that the spool doesn't slip at a critcal moment (per J Holden).
