people say its better to fish at night as some species of fish have very sensitive eyes e.g whiting and therefore will make more of an appearence when its darker.
but it can depend on where your fishing if the colour of the water is really muckey then this will bring fish in aswell as the light wont be as penetrating.

Think it depends where you are really mate. I'd have a word with the local lads and see if theres much of a difference? Sometimes a mark will be twice as productive in the dark, other places where the water is always coloured it makes little difference.
Personally i think the tides and the sea state are more important, that said, if you get a combo of onshore wind, good tide running and darkness you can have a really decent session. Whiting I think certainly feed more confidently in the dark.
