sorry, i feel i must retract my statement about maccy as an alternative to crab, seems like thats not the case, i was just hypothesiszing really, as the only thing i have caught smoothies on is peeler and hardbacks, sorry for any misunderstanding, i will research my answers more thoroughly in future...

if you can't get peelers then small hard back crabs can be a suitable alternative, and they should be fairly easy to collect on any rocky shoreline at low tide, otherwise i am sure large squid or mackerel baits will work, but crab is king

great job lee (cuckoo), every time i see you post something on here it looks like you've had a blinder and some great fish despite sometimes facing adverse conditions ie weed etc. tell us your secrets ;)

if you want smuts then try a pulley rig with size 1/0-3/0 hooks loaded with peeler or peeler rag combo, the clipped rig will help you get more range on your casts and bass will also take this bait, i don't know havant very well, but hayling is fishing ok atm, had a couple of nice smuts there the oth...
