Penn,s are no more problematic than any other brand of big clumsy fixed spools. Its just that their predecessor the 70 was such a bombproof reel and everyone compares them against it. If you definately need to cast 8 oz then the best budget rod is probably the Ron Thompson Axcellerator.
If you can get away with 6 oz then Abu Hellbenders or Esprits are a good option. Both will handle 8 oz if you do an off the ground cast but don,t quote me on that.

I,ve heard that the spool release lever is prone to stopping working , but not heard any other complaints other than the cheap Abu,s are s***e from the daiwa fan club.
I have a couple of 7001i Abu,s that have given no problems for 2 years.

Thanks for that Strathy, I now understand a lot more about carp rods and it seems to me that a 2.5 pound test curve rod would be about right for mackerel feathers or lures but not up to chucking a 5 or 6oz sinker and bait 100 odd yards out into the briny. You need a 5,1/2 lb TC Spod rod for 5oz or ...

Take it to the shop you got it from. They will either fix it or if its still in warranty they will replace it.
