More Hips and Tints

Tell you what, let’s have Line next. Not much to say really, line’s line innit? Don’t forget, some of this is aimed at newcomers. · In days of yore, line was all horse tail-hairs knotted together. They graded the diameters, so it tapered to the hook. Nothing’s new, really. · Molten nylon monofilamen...

Hints & Tips

Death is sad, time to lighten up, methinks. Strange but True? There must be a wealth of this out there, just a couple for now. 8O means number of witnesses. * Scissors dropped overboard in boat comp. Next cast, bloke snags bottom, winds snagged thing in, takes a pollack on the way up. He'd snagged t...

Tips and hints

Thanks, Troops, this thread is developing nicely, I'm learning too. Think we'll have Hypothermia next? Did we do this last week? No? OK then. More relevant on the beach, likely to be spotted by a skipper on charter boats, small boat folk generally know so much about what they're doing they've alread...

Tips & Hints

Hurrah for Worms! Not my specialised subject, do leap in with more and better stuff, I need the tips too. Need to get some bait-diggers writing on this subject. * Newcomers (as we all once were, not that long ago for me): hold a ragworm just behind the head, gently squeeze until its fangs come out. ...

tips and hints

Screaming, the only cod tip I've got is don't fish where I do. Always looking to other people on this one. Best about 24lb boat, three or four squid on a pennel. Worst were two 21cm ones which saved my reputation in a comp the other week, they came on size 10 carp hooks on 10lb fluorocarb in two foo...

tips & hints

Nice. Fifty hits in a few hours, and people sharing. Hadn't thought of keeping the mack permanently frozen, thanks. Guess the hints will peter out once the fishing picks up again? Keep it up, troops, but wait for the flames when someone thinks their best-kept secret is common knowledge! And I don't ...

Hooky Street

There's a book in all of us, mine's pages are already stuck together though. Hooks, don't talk to me abaht hooks! As with all this lot, steal the best bits, forget the rest. * Select your bait, then the hook size to suit. Always have the point standing clear of the bait. * We tend to use hooks with ...

Spanking Mackerel

Concrete -- can't top the squirrel story, best I've done is make a special envelope for some Embassy fag coupons, perfect fit, then write the tiniest address on it next to the stamp. Turned up OK, Royal Mail entered into the spirit of it that time. Over to you, then. Right, where was I? Yes, the 'um...

daiwa 130

Didn't mean to mislead, I've only got the one of these but should have bought a pair. Used never less than twice a month all year round and it's the first one (of three) that I set up in comps, chesil to pevensey. You'll be OK with them. There's a guy I know I'll never beat, 'Rob', he uses the setup...

Fun with Squid

Well now, troops, thirty reads a day but no-one anything to add?

If we're not careful, we'll do 'Spanking Mackerel' next, and you'll all stay behind until it's finished.

I don't know, work me fingers to the bone, what encouragement do I get?

daiwa supercast 130

Had one since they came out, should've bought a pair. Just about to have the spigot built up again with carbon spray, the joint has closed half an inch since new, as intended by design. Clever design touch, wet-grip sections either side of the joint to separate it. Will cast 5oz however far 400 turn...

single voice

Oooh ... politics. This'll run, then. If found depressing, I don't mind if the thread is pulled (apologies to the originator), we've tried to say all this before. Haven't read the interview, but the National Federation of Sea Anglers has been telling us it is the single voice for some time. That sai...

hooking squid

Shore - Agreed: most people use StuartDV's method, it copes with casting. Boat - just hook it once through the pointed end, check that it seems to flow naturally when you lower it into the water. Not many fish will nick an entire squid without having a mouth big enough to take the hook too, you shou...

You'd expect there to be loads in this forum, I keep looking and wondering why not. Anyroadup, no critique without solutions: Part One - Fun with Squid * If you clean fish or prepare bait at home (calamari squid, etc), keep the lumps in a 2kg ice cream box, add anything else you fancy. Bung it in th...

naked line - braided girls

Hi mate, To do it well, you're gonna need two spare reels (or mates reels), you ain't gonna want to do this by hand. You'll need time to do it in one unbroken session, it can cause confusion. Load the braid onto your Abu first, tie a good quality knot to join your backing line on, then load the back...
