Which way up?

It's only in the past few years that fixed spool reels have come on well ins ea angling, as makers corrosion-proof them better. There's about a fifty-fifty split on their popularity with multipliers now, and many won't swap what they've become comfortable with. A large, boat-designed multiplier migh...

hook lengths

May I add, when tying one's own rigs: * The longer the hook snood, the heavier the breaking strain of line you will find comfortable. Fine lines have a tendency to tangle, OK if you're up for it but no fun for pleasure fishing. * Flapper rigs - imagine what happens as it hits the water. As a consequ...

illuminated tips

Interesting. I've done most of the suggestions: * making up a NiMH battery pack with a headlamp on a baby tripod and shining it up (bulky and heavy); *glowsticks taped on (odd tangle) * aiming a 1.5 watt LED up the bore of a fibre-glass rod tip (nice cool light all along but excessive power demand; ...

ILLUMINATED ROD TIPS

Right, this'll be interesting, especially if it works. If you can get commercial advantage out of it, so be it but contributors will need (at least) an acknowledgement. This is more of a running question, bugged me for years, need help from rod-customisers and fibre-optic folk. Some of my rods have ...

RIG BITS

Find a haberdashery (wot is a shop wot does bits fer yer clothes) or hobby / crafts store. I suspect the people who sell small packets of beads and sequins to tackle shops buy them in these shops, then get worker elves to put them in small packs for us to pay the same price. E.G. 500 x 3mm clear bea...

milford on sea

Just reinforcing the earlier replies. Google Earth to the fort at the end of the spit, this is Hurst Castle. A decent cast will put you into 8 knots of tide on a bad day, imagine half the Channel trying to get through a one-mile gap. It's so-many-cubic-Everests, or somesuch statistic. Use your judge...

Reel question

1. Due to security issues with fishing line on aircraft (yes, really) you might consider picking up a reel from a tackle shop here and having it loaded with line as part of the deal. New multipliers take a bit of setting up, you may want to go the fixed-spool route. Reel size needs to hold 200yd of ...

Bait needles

No, the metal ain't important mate. Tread careful, you might be looking at those used for coarse fishing, which generally have a handle that you can use a lot of force to push through a hard bait. Sea angler's bait needles are just straight wires with a ferrule at one end and a point at the other. T...

Fishing Report - Milford ( Hurst ) shingle bank

9 of us fished mini-comp here night of Fri 16 Feb 07, 2 hrs up, 3 hrs down. Dire. I think one whiting and about six dogfish between us all, not for lack of trying. Entire seabed shifting, crashing surf, hand-holding to keep line taut was best solution.

Re off the rocks, if they're small enough you can try hanging them from a grip lead through the gils and lowering down. Shouldn't bother with conger, you just know what's going to happen. Re swimbladders, I seen one guy on the boats expound his theory they only need a little pressure to equalise it....

swizzle stick

Swizzle, or Twizzle sticks: You can't buy these, but you can buy a wooden drumstick and a pair of cymbals from a music shop, cut off the stick tip and round the end with sandpaper. The taper of the stick is important. Pt.I: With a deep-hooked flattie, hold the snood so the fish hangs on its own weig...

fish handling

Nice piece, I think we should catch up with the coarse anglers if we are going to return our fish. Many beach comps are catch, witness, measure & release, I'm not squeamish about eating my catch but this is a 'good thing'. It can be done without ever touching the fish. Weigh and release: go to a dec...

tilley lamps

Not seen so often on the beach nowadays, so many people find the convenience of headlamps worthwhile BUT you can't warm your hands or a pastie on a headlamp. If you are definitely going to get one, make sure it has a flat top to balance your pie on, r make a wiire frame for it to do so. It's a lot o...

Screaming, The fifty yard thing is just to help visualise what's going on whem iys cast out to sea, whether hooks are near the bottom or not. I had two one-hour casting lessons in my life, more use than any book or video, and use an aerialised off the ground cast only. I can;t begin to describe how ...
