like andy said if you don't get a bait in the water you will never know if it was worth it or not. look at the tide tables and either fish 2 hours before low tide (ebb) or 2/3 hours after the low tide going up.
go out there and try it bud.

personally i wouldn't choose a 16ft rod straight away as you may not be able to cope with it. A 14ft beachcaster should do a treat.
