Daiwa Interline beach rod, quite stiff action but is perfect for fishing off the rocks: no rings or fittings to get damaged, don't really need a tripod so less to carry. Put heat shrink all along the bottom section, there's no bend action in that anyway. Mine's 10'6" long now, I cut the butt down fr...

Portland catch report
Thu 11 Sep, various marks/drifts within 2 miles of Portland:
cod
pollack
mackerel (sparse)
gurnard
all types of wrasse
bream
dogfish
smoothhound
pout
garfish
mini-species
The variety kept the pot boiling but a pretty slow day in all, none of the above worth writing home about.

Dunno how to contact them, but I've seen a couple of guys who launch from Shore Road, Hythe, in expensive inflatable kayaks at high water. Park on the gravel, inflate, lug across the road and straight in to the 'oggin. Brightly-coloured, if you see them on the water nip round to the car park and lea...

Still got one I won as a child in 1971: 12' coarse float rod 10' coarse ledgering rod 8' pier rod 6' boat road (about 150lb class I guess, not many tuna in the Solent) 9' fly rod all this from just two handles and god knows how many bits of fibreglass. Mind you, I caught fish but they're sh1te rods.

Tested in one of the glossy mags a few years ago, the Bimini acts as a shock absorber and can give the effect of a higher breaking strain knot than the others. You gotta tie it right, first time, every time though, so it's not for everyone especially if you are under pressure. Why not tie it on at h...

If I knew how to make high-quality joints, then I'd be getting my blanks from the factory and building custom rods from max 4'0" sections. With beach shelters folding to 4' as well, nobody need ever have a great bundle of kit running from the back of the car to the dashboard any more. As a kid in th...

Poingdestres in Southampton should be open in the morning, but you haven't said where you are mate. Could be a bit of a drive if you're in South Shields. On holiday abroad, at worst I've gone to the shoreline or rocks with knife or pliers, prized off some crustaceans, smashed them open and used them...

Sometimes you just gotta concentrate on dog's to get your score up. By default, colleagues and I all use the same for these occasions: Size 1 Grauvell circle hook, choose the rig style to suit your casting distance. Say it's a three-hook rig anyway. Take one thick fillet of mackerel, cut on the diag...
