First time out night fishing for me with my granddaughter - she was happy with the rods rattling and the fish coming in regularly until the chilly NE wind got a bit too much. Might try Stokes Bay over a high tide next, fishing from the car.

Gilkicker 29 April

Brief session 8-10pm. Windy but lots of fish to rag and sandeel. Pout, baby smuts and doggies. Good to get out again and the rod tops rattled non-stop.

Not often, I usually go more round to the west, where it starts to straighten off down to Stokes Bay proper, especially when fishing up to high tide. Less weed as a rule.

Gilkicker 29 December - yet more whiting

3 hours up to HT last night, still plenty of whiting though none of the big ones this time for me. Squid as good as sandeel - just as well since I had plenty left from last week. No weed and no moon again (where's it gone?!). So cold the bait didn't thaw on the cutting board. Dead still and misty - ...

Gilkicker 22 December - whiting!

Better late than never....
7pm-10pm, HT just after 6pm. Lots of whiting, a few good ones up to 1lb, plus one doggie. No pout. Sandeel outfished squid by a mile. Really got going about 8pm then a fish a cast until I packed up, some doubles. No moon, no weed.

Good fishing without the walking. Was that over the high tide?
Can't find a way to get the photo off my ancient camera to share how big the best whiting were on Monday - about or just over 1lb. The gales coming this weekend could make it even more interesting.

Good session. It must be carpeted with whiting out there right now, and several of them are bigger than we've had round here for many years. How to get past them for any codling that might still be around? Anyone ever had any success with a the kind of self-baiting live bait rig they try down at Dun...

4/0 + 7/0 (!) hooks on a flowing trace - I was after something bigger! Got a bit interesting once but it was a big whiting and doggie double header. Most at range, but also caught when dropped in short.

Whiting at Gilkicker tonight 23/11

3 hour session at Gilkicker this evening 5-8pm, 20+ whiting of good average size with 6 around the 1lb mark kept for eating, plus just 2 pout and 2 doggies, all on big squid baits. No wind, no weed, non-stop bites until I ran out of bait.

Never had anything worthwhile there during the day. Only ever fish it after dark now with any of worm, squid or sandeel and avoid big high tides (too much flow and any weed around makes it unfishable).

Sunday night gave a few whiting, baby smuts and a decent doggie all on squid. Some weed but not a problem.

But last night the weed was impossible on the flood. Just 3 small whiting and a heap of red stuff. Should have known better with that huge spring tide.

Forgot to say he went again to the same place on Tuesday night and caught a 3.5lb bass on Sainsbury's squid rings (he had used all the bait in the freezer).
