Well if it worked 20 years ago, it is still going to work now Geoff. We constantly hear about new wonder lures which cost an arm and a leg of course but the basics don't change. I knew an old geezer a few years ago who was still putting home made "silver paper" on his mackerel lures. "Well it works...

Put a dexter on it!

Last time I went wreck fishing in the English Channel we first visited the Varne Bank to catch live sandeels. We were using small shrimp lures (6 off) with very small hooks. Having caught a few sandeels I suddenly felt a strong tug on the line and assumed I had caught one or more mackerel. When I wo...

Amazing that in just three or four years bass stocks should fall to such an extent if that is true. In my own experience, it was not difficult to take a few sizable bass off the south coast beaches up to 2012 but there have been far fewer since then. It can only be commercial over-fishing if it is ...

English Channel Report 14/6/2015 - And a new species for me!

Yesterday, together with 2 friends (Dave and his son Tim), we participated in our Fishing Club's June Competition - 'Heaviest Fish'. As we had been unable to fish last month's competition ('Heaviest Bass') due to windy conditions, we decided to run the two competitions together. We launched Dave's W...

I am partially disabled, spinal damage about 3 or 4 years ago has left me with no feeling below the knees and in 6 fingers. I thought my boat fishing days were over but the chap who owns the boat I go fishing in has been amazing. He knows that I can't pull my weight when it comes to launching and re...

Here is my 484, bought from Charlton & Brignall in Morecambe around the mid 1970s. It is in near mint condition. Hi Joe, My advice would be to talk to experienced yak anglers before making any purchase. They will be able to give you good advice as to what to start with and will probably offer to accompany you out until you have some experience. My local sea angling club (in Kent) has several yak anglers and th...

I only go boat fishing these days and the weather this last year has been absolutely dreadful. I am a member of Dymchurch Sea Angling Club and I think that we have only been able to fish 5 or 6 competitions this last year. Our cod open competition was blown off, as was the reserve date and the reser...

I went out in my mate Dave's Warrior 175 boat on Tuesday, together with Dave's son Tim, as we saw a window in the windy forecasts we have had of late. We launched the boat on an outgoing tide from Dymchurch slipway and were afloat just before the sun rose over the horizon. On the way to the fishing ...

In the boat fishing club I am in (Dymchurch and District Sea Angling Club), we have an annual Lifejacket Clinic when the RNLI come to the club one evening and check out everybody's lifejackets. You would be surprised how many are found to be faulty - even to brand new jackets having their gas cartri...

I should have been fishing the Dungeness area of the English Channel today in my local Dymchurch Sea Angling Club's 'Cod Open' boat fishing competition. Unfortunately it had to be postponed because of the windy weather. Today's competition wasn't the scheduled date, nor the reserve date and not even...

There is a storm forecast for the next few days and a good blow should wash in a load of bait towards the shore. This will bring in the big cod, so I expect catches to be much better thereafter.

A big improvement on the flimsy plastic lever.
