OKUMA Magnetix MG20LS Multiplier
This is the review of the Okuma Magnetix Multiplier Reel, Model MG20LS. The LS simply means it ha a level wind.
1. What I Like About This Reel.
I spooled this with 15lb .35 Red Ice and topped it off with a 60lb tapered shockleader, It worked straight out of the box and I must say, the mag control is excellent. Even on the first casts where I would expect the line to fluff up a bit on the spool, there was hardly anything. First rate.
The reel is very forgiving and even some crappy casts that I have done with this, have gone a bit awry, but recoverable. I wouldn't have got away with it with the 525 Mag.
The ratchet is nice and loud.
The handle is a lot more comfortable than my 525 mag and is very nice to use.
The price - I paid 54 quid and I think that is a real bargain price for a reel of this quality - especially when it has a 5 year guarantee.
2. What I Don't Like About This Reel
The main thing is the amount of room you have to place your thumb on the spool I don't have very big fingers at all, but I found this a real challenge - especially in the wet without a thumb guard. If you get one - use a thumb guard.
It is very slow - even with the magnets rolled off, but I think this is mainly due to the level wind. Having said that, I used my mates 7HT with a level wind and it was a lot quicker than this.
The handle can get in the way (I use this reel down) so when the o free spool, the right hand holding the rod can be fouled by the position o the handle - very frustrating.
I think tapered leaders would be the norm as the aperture is very small on the level wind and the leader knot could easily get caught on it.
3. Conclusion.
I think this reel is more aimed at fishing piers or at short range over sandy beaches, as I don't think it has the cranking power of the 525 Mag. However, for a first time multiplier, I would say it would be a first choice, because it is so forgiving and the magnets work so well.
There is another version, the MG30 but looking at the specs I think this is more suited to boats as the spool can take a lot more line than the MG20, but at the same time, the MG20 could to with handling a bit more.
This is just my opinion, so feel free to disagree and correct any of the above.
