PENN 525 Supermag Xtra

There is loads of info in Total Sea Fishing and Sea Angler on this reel, so I won't bore you with going over the stuff all over again, so here goes. I bought this for 150 quid from Gerrys Fishing which is reduced from 200 quid. I must say, the service is exceptional from these guys, so if your thinking of buying fishing stuff by mail order, you should consider these. Anyway, back to the reel. Out of the box, and looking at the instructions, it dawned on me that in my opinion (as a novice) Penn really have got it wrong with the way it is marketted. I bought this as it is sooooo versatile in the braking as it contains featues from the Supermag with some extra ideas for the bearings and mag braking for this model. The reason I bought it is because for the extra money, I could start off with it and then use it for the next "x" years, adjusting it according to my ability. If you look at the instructions and the way the diagrams are presented, it is clear that it is marketted for expert anglers already familiar with multipliers. I normally use a fixed spool and this is my first multiplier so bear with me OK ? Anyway, on to build quality. If you have seen the pictures of this reel, you can see the knob on the side to adjust the magnets. However, whilst playing around, I turned the knob to full to see (as per instructions) how the magnets affect the free running of the reel when you spin it. I did not adjust this knob that hard, but it locked up and when i tried to turn it back, a bit of plastic broke on the bottom of the knob (which is stepped for a "kind of" ratchet effect). It had to beremoved and the spindle turned byck wit pliers in order for it to work again. CRAP ! Not good for a reel that costs about 200 auid and is top of the range in this series. For the sake of another couple of pence, a more substantial knob could have been used I'm sure. Apart from that, the reel is brilliant for casting. I've never used a multiplier and after about 20 to 30 casts (proper ones I add - really going for it) DID NOT BIRDS NEST IT ONCE ! It works. The retrieve is very quick aswell, and I think it is probalbly quicker than my fixed spool SurfMaster 850's. So to summarise, if you want a reel for a beginner to expert, you can't really go wrong. I looked at the Abu Garcia 7000, but they aren't that good on rough ground, where this one is (according to the guy with the Abu Garcia 7000). So for a reel to be used from beginner to expert, this one is the one to go for in my opinion, but if your a beginner, then 2 things need to happen. 1. PENN - explain things clearly and sort the knob out. 2. Get advice on setting them up and using them from someone who already is familiar with using mag multipliers. All in all, a brilliant piece of kit except from the points raised. Thanks for reading. (Rated a 9 because although excellent for experts, not so user friendly (instructions and knob) for biginners.)

PENN 525 Supermag Xtra

Since buying this reel : 1. The end plates cracked. 2. The magnets got stuck when winding them in and out (fixed with WD40 and oil) 3. The ratchet comes on every so often mid-cast. Very annoying (and noisy) It has very dubious build quality so be warned if you are thinking of buying one. Try the 525 Mag Xtra instead - know it has a slidey instead of a knob for the magnets, but at least it isn't made in England - like the crap Supermag Xtra.
