enter the geek!!!!
i've sent this to a few people by PM but I'm yet to hear how they got on with it..so I'm going public!
Now listen up OK!
This is a set of DATA contained within a PROGRAM so once you download the program it stays on your computer as a sort of calculator working off your PC's internal clock which is automatically adjusted for UK summertime (etc).
All the algorithyms to do with sun/moon/sunrise/sunset etc are contained within a complex mathematical program running off a sizeable database! With me so far
It may sound complicated but it's a doddle, it works, and it hasn't caused any problems on my PC!
Due to the UK government trying to copyright the gravitational pull of the sun and moon (WTF!!??!!) this site can only give a limited number of locations (40?) around the UK, mostly main ports, and I believe it is something to do with scientific research as they HAVE to mention a maritime research in Liverpool to be able to publish the data.
However, it IS allowed to calculate stuff WAY into the future on those tidal observation locations..and one of them is probably near YOU! Seriously!
GO TO >
http://www.arachnoid.com/JTides/
scroll down to the link beneath the pic of stranded boat..
READ THE NOTES ABOUT FREEWARE. ie - be godamn grateful for this stuff..the guy who did this sounds like a real cool dude!
READ THE STUFF ABOUT UKHO RESTRICTIONS (which is why u should be grateful!) and the note about : See below (Version 4.9 build 232) for a restoration of some UK sites.
I didn't understand the stuff about different versions and rebuilds so I just downloaded the main program and it seemed to have all the UK data in it..luckily enough cos that's as far as my technoblindness allows me to venture!
It's up to you but I went to http://java.com/ and got the latest java download as well just to be sure.
NEXT >
Once uv downloaded the main (JTides.exe) program and the Java update (if required..may as well do it anyway as Java is used on loads of internet stuff),
INSTALL/RUN the program..u should get a wee icon on ur desktop.
NEXT >
Click on item to run program.
GOTO > {SITE MENU} top left on toolbar
CLICK > SELECT > "Nearest Sites"
..and you should find a place near you with data for the foreseeable future with regards to nominal tide heights, times, twighlight, daylength, etc, etc, etc.
Quite an amazing program as you can graphically see the daylight/twighlight/darkness increasing/decreasing as you go forward (or even back!) through the year day/month at a time
Try it..it's free, a one-off download program & database, no spam or login/passwords to remember, just plain old FREEWARE..and a damn fine one it is too!
Enjoy planning trips for as far into the future as you like, and for different parts of the country at the click of a mouse!
For example, I'm from South Wales but I can find out in 1/2 clicks what time/height/dusk, etc will be in JERSEY/WHITBY/MORAY FIRTH on 8th November 2012 (should I wish to) in a couple of clicks!
Now don't y'all go rushing to thank me at once now! |

Darlings, I feel I must issue an apology
No offense intended with the 'colourfull' language in my original post, but one was somewhat 'over refreshed' having only just stumbled home from the pub and just a tad wild-eyed with excitement at the opportunity to share on a larger scale the program I'd found only last week! Indeed, such is it's intention that it circumnavigates the Admiralty's money-grabbing endeavours from a captive audience concerning long term tide predictions!
I've now edited the offending text and recoursed to English diction with only a smattering of colloquialisms!
