I have some moulds for making weights with and without grips. The problem is that the wire puts the cost of the weights up. So I am thinking that perhaps the Stainless steel wire in old car tyres will do the job. Anyone tried it let me know.
Or am I just whistling in the wind? |

i sopose it doesn't realy matter as long as the wire dont bend out really easy, i have some wieghts with fairly easy to bend wire and they hold in rough sea's well.
have found wire on the beach and just cut it to fit on leads that the old crabs have bust on it, still holds as good as it did with the original grabs it had here is a pic of refitted leads with the salvaged wire i found they are not to bad but they do there job
i like to find a use for everthing i find/scavenge from the beaches and put it into good use.
in my eyes the beach is a free tackle shop and the odd browse around can come up with some nice finds

I have overcome the problem of adding extra cost to my weight making by using stainless steel spokes from old bicycle wheels. If they are on the thick side they can be used for boat weights in making the eye at the top of them. ! spoke is enough to make 5 weights.
I am now happy with this setup. Cheers keith |

The way I make my weights is to melt the lead on a portable gas stove and the with the mould in a vice preheat the mould with a gas blowlamp and whilst still hot pour the lead into the mould and give it time to cool off.
I may consider doing a sticky on general chat with step by step instuction with pics., if it wqill help. Cheers keith |
