Got loads of Winkles on the rocks by me and seem to remember that I really liked eating them with garlic mayo and crusty brown bread, but how do i cook them? I assume boiling but how long for? and do I need to add anything to the water? or change the water during cooking? big grin

Hi in reply to your question on cooking winkles, soak them in salted fresh water for about 30 minutes, this will allow them to clean themselves,to cook drop them into boiling salted water bring back to the boil and simmer for about 2 minutes, drain them off and enjoy! Easiest way to get them from the shell is by using a needle.Hope this helps Darren.[/i]

Darren i must try cooking them your way, i think your idea of letting them soak first is a great idea because the only thing that puts me off them is when i get bits of sand or grit while eating them,

How i cook them is, say you have about 3 pints of them to cook i place them in the pot with just enough water to cover them then add a third of a pint of salt stir in some garlic bring to the boil and then check them after a few minutes to see if the cap comes away easy

That would be after rinsing them in cold water to remove as much sand and grit as possible,

But your idea has got me to think that maybe I should chuck them in clean salt water for the journey home and let them do the work for me,

Cheers,

I seem to recollect a fishing buddy tipping whelks in the sink and leaving them overnight to clean. Suprised him how far up a tiled surface they got ,took half a day to round `em all up ,chuckle chuckle !
