What I fail to understand is why folk go to sea without basic safety equipement. I mean you wouldn't climb a mountain in sandels and no rope. It beats me why folk still do it! |

what a horrible thing to happen but i'm suprised it doesn't happen more often
i know for a fact that the crab fisherman from here who all go out single handedly dont wear life jackets
and to make things worse a lot of the older ones are all ex members of the lifeboat crew
pot and kettle comes to mind because when i was helping my father in law in our 18ft orkney boat setting gill nets years ago we never wore lifejackets because when setting nets they can catch on anything so easily you just didnt want to risk being pulled overboad
and the stupid thing is i now wear a flotation suit when i go beachfishing to keep warm n dry just cant help wondering what if
my thoughts and best wishes to his family xx |

A lifejacket is not a fashion accessory, when afloat wear one at all times. Last year the Commodore of the local Sailing Club fell overboard and drowned within minutes in view of his friends and family. The coroners verdict was that a life-jacket would have saved his life. Throwing caution to the wind can be a fatal game to play especially at sea. The man I pulled out of the water on 17th March was wearing a life-jacket underneath his coat and it saved his life. |
