Hello,
this is my first post in this forum.
First of all I must say sorry for my english before I go on. Im from Spain and I dont know as much english Id like.
This is a question about the noise of the reel when casting. I hope you can help me because Its obvious Im doing something wrong.
I dont know if its wrong the spool centering and the end float tension. I try to center the spool and leave a minimum lateral movement.
Spool balance. I have tried the cotton style, 2 coarse humps, 2 side humps and 1 in the middle, starting with a knot in the midle, in one side, starting with a piece of electric tape...
I havent get an smooth noise like I have heard in some casting videos.
What am I doing wrong?
Thank you very much in advance.
Regards |

I have 3 but im worried about 2 because 1 is a abu 650 c3ct elite, the blue one with 2 brake blokes. I use it for fishing.
The other 2 are a 5500 and 6500 c3ct mag elite with no centrifugal brakes.
Thanks |

sorry Montero, i've no experience with mag' reels.
i've had this problem when;- bareings have run dry and need oil or
i've had much too little line on the reel causeing it spin the bareings too fast.
it could be;- worn bareings or a twisted cage BUT;-
i'd talk to someone who knows more about these reels first as it maybe some thing simple , possibly the settings for the magnetic brakes.
any ideas anyone? TJ?

Thank you very much for your answer.
At least one of the mag reels is quite new and I usually clean and reoil the bearings with tgs yellow label except for a few times I tried the tournament formula.
I normally use 3 mags with +-+ setup but this will not affect the spool noise I m afraid.
Best regards |

montero, hi there,
the noise you are experiencing could well be the spool itself. having got qiute a few mag braked reels, i find that it some cases it could well be the spool itself and not the line lay or bearings.
another thing to consider is the end float. there should be just enough end float so you can just move the spool from side to side when it is in free spool.
as regards the balancing you need to maybe re-lay the line several times and in different ways to quieten the reel down. if this does not work then start by changing the bearings.
CLEANING BEARINGS.
soak the bearings in lighter fuel for a few minutes and give them a swish around in the container a few times. take them out of the lighter fuel and place them on some kitchen towel to soak up excess fuel. spin the bearings to ensure that they are dry. you can now go ahead and oil them. all you need to do is to add two tiny drops of your chosen oil. then wipe away the excess oil. your bearings should now be clean, oiled and ready to go.
as a matter of interest i run all of my reels with the dust covers removed from the bearings.
what you also have to remember is that the thinner the oil the more braking you will need. and vice versa.
if after all this you are still having problems with noise then i would look at changing the spool.
hope this helps you out.

For testing the spool balance after you fill in it with the line do you have to go to have a few cast and listen to the noise or simply spin the spool by hand?
I bought a pair of bearings last day in bearing shop. They are not the abu originals of course. they produce less noise but spin for less time than the original ones. Which can be better?
Tj, have you read the private message?
Thank you for your help.

once you have re-filled the spool you can spin it up and place it on a work surface. a glass chopping board is good as it allows you to here more what is going on with the balance etc. |
