Hi

I fish the south suffolk (Dunwich and down to Languard) beaches and am just starting beach fishing again this autumn/winter.

I have heard mention now a few times the Pulley and the Pulley Pennel Rig. Can anyone who uses it tell me a bit more about it and why its rated in the this area?

I usually use a straight Pennel Paternoster usually with a line clip. Similar really to my uptide rig but with a shorter trace.

PS
I'm off to Orford Island in a week or so and am considering what would be best to use there.

Many Thanks
Nick

Hi "nickw"
Heres a simple picture of a pulley pennel rig.
Ideal for rocky bottoms.

Hi Euge

Thanks for that, I can see how it is made now. Looks like if might be useful for a couple of places I have been fishing where there are snags. Any comment about the length of the different sections and suggestions for the breaking strain of the hok link?

Hi " nickw "
I use this trace alot myself. Its a personal favourite of mine off a deep pier mark we have in the southeast.
As you may know the sea bed has some huge boulders and believe it or not pebbles in some places the size of cars.

I sometimes make the hook lengh as long as 6ft and match the sinker lengh to the swivel the same size.
It may sound a long trace but when hooking decent size fish off piers it helps clear the weight, from these giant rocks from the onset of striking into the fish.
Of course the led will lift due to a good fish on the take to the pully system anyway but if hes fighting hard for the bottom at least youve a six foot advantage on him.

Add a weak link to the led also just incase the weight does snagg,, if you lose the led hopefully your still have the fish.

This rig works just as well on any beach, hopefully clearing any rocks or weed that may also be there.
Cought loads of fish on this rig,,, helps with a nice big fresh bait with every thing kept nice strait and streamlined

I use both the pully rig and pulley pennel rig along with the clipped pasternoster rigs. My pulley rigs are used no matter what if im cod fishing over any ground with the exception of esturies where ill opt for a single hook clipped rig due to the smaller fish. You might find a few tips in the general forum where i had some trouble with pulley pennel rigs but there will be a few tips for tieing them there.

When i have used pulley rigs on a sea bed that is hard. i find that bite detection is very poor due to the weight not gripping the bottom properly so when a fish bites the weight lifts where as if i use a single hook clip down rig the bite detection is so much better. just a point to add dont know if anyone else has this problem.

Point taken " magictoys "
Speaking of points i guess its at this point its all important to have that hook as sharp as possible, so in the inevitability of that greedy fish lifting any weight at all hes going to be, well and truely suckkkerd.

Pulley rig, rotten bottom or clipped down, i still dont think the opposeing problem of drag along the bottom of any ( hard beach or sandy beach ) where we are continously tightening line against the pull of the tide will only be solved by larger wires on gripp leds.

The pulley is such a comfortable trace being so streamlined when casting and when reeling in....

Two, for me dropped at 3ft lengths on any beach make for a tangle free comfortable days fishing big grin
