Fishing the Suffolk Coast

The reports for the Suffolk coast seem to be getting fewer, has anyone fished in the last 2 weeks and what was caught. I'm planning a trip in 2 weeks and was wondering where is fishing well, I am looking at Aldeburgh but if anyone can suggest a better venue at the moment I would appreciate it. Any codling coming in?

Talking to a few people and listening to conversations in the tackle shop plenty of fish are being caught including a few cod. Main problem is the number of undersize whiting still about, which are getting the bait before the cod get a look-in.

I have heard of cod from Dunwich, Aldeburgh and Felixstowe - the beaches i'm interested in. My next trip is planned for Friday, so if anyone has any updates i'd be interested as have not yet decided venue.

Just back from a few hours down at Felixstowe. I fished Landguard on the ebb tide until 18.30 (HT was 12.30). Loads of small whiting and pout about.
No codling for me this time but the conditions were probably not the best bright sunny and dead calm. Useful though to give all the equipment a tryout as I have been beach fishing for years.

I am going to the Butts at Felixtowe, (just to the left of the Fort) on the Mon 28th Nov.
What date are you planning? if you are interested I will post a report the next day.
I went for a walk down there last week and had a chat with the fishermen there, not much to report though mainly whiting and small at that.
Hope to have more luck on Mon! and hoping for the wind to die down, high tide is about 2100hrs.
Will start about 1700hrs to 2300hrs.
I was disgusted with the amount of fishing litter there, some clever person had disgarded an oversize whiting in the car park next to the Fort, the bins were only 10 ft away, :oops: 8O

I was planning to go today but plans changed at last moment.
I will be going down to Languard during the week but not yet sure which day. I usually fish the same area you describe between the sea defences and the fort.
Hopefully the storm of the last couple of days will have stirred things up and the cod will be feeding close in.

Fished Shingle street 19/11/05 from 17:00 - 01:00 caught 12 fish mainly whighting apart from 2 codling both keepers the largest was 3lb, caught on frozen black lug with a whole squid on a pulley pennel. Fun nights fishing cold but the 24 mile an hour winds predicted didn't show.

7 of us fished starting about 100yds to the right of the Manor Car park.
Commenced at 1730-2300hrs Mon 28th Nov (high tide about 2100hrs).
About 40 oversize Whiting, about the same undersize.
2 Codling over size but only just.
1 Dab
A few Pouting, (I had one at 28cm, nice fish!) happy

These numbers are for the total for 7 of us!
Herring seemed to work better than Mackeral, with Lug, Rag and Squid in any combination.
The sea was quite calm, the wind was about 10mph from the NW. Temp was about 3C but felt colder when we had to move up and fish from the wall.
Most fish were caught before the ebb started.
In all a comfortable and enjoyable night. (especially as I was able to get my Tilley working properly big grin

Excellent report ronnie.

Still plenty of fish about then. Be nice to see a few more Cod like those now appearing furhter up the coast and to the dinghys.

The forecast has some easterly winds for Felixstowe

I'm hoping to get down to Landguard later in the week so see if that makes any difference.

REF: MANOR END CAR PARK / DIRECTIONS:
A14 TO FELIXSTOWE.
TURN RIGHT AT THE DOCKSPUR ROUNDABOUT.
DRIVE DOWN TO THE DOCKS AREA.
NEXT ROUNDABOUT GO STRAIGHT ON TO THE SEAFRONT
(DO NOT GO INTO THE DOCK ENTRANCE ON THE RIGHT).
GO PAST THE CARAVAN SITE ON LEFT.
GO OVER THE RAILWAY LINES (SLOWLY).
AT THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHTS TURN RIGHT.
FOLLOW THIS ROAD UNTIL THE ROAD BENDS TO THE RIGHT.
ON THAT BEND YOU TURN LEFT TOWARDS THE SEAFRONT.
TAKE THE NEXT TURNING ON THE RIGHT.
FOLLOW THAT ROAD TO THE END TO
MANOR CAR PARK.
PARK IN THE FURTHEST LEFT HAND CORNER.
THE BEACH IS ABOUT 30-40YDS AWAY.
GO DOWN THE METAL STEPS 100YDS TO THE RIGHT.
I FISHED IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF THE STEPS IN BETWEEN THE GROYNES...SPELT THAT WRONG I THINK.
DO NOT FISH NEAR THE LAST GROYNE THERE IS A BIG SNAG THERE.
OR YOU CAN WALK ALONG THE STEPS ON THE BEACH TO CHOOSE A SPOT CLOSER TO THE FORT.
(BEWARE ON SOME HIGH TIDES THE STEPS ARE UNUSEABLE)

I USE THIS CAR PARK BECAUSE THE LIGHTS FROM THE DOCKS ENSURE THE CAR IS NOT IN DARKNESS, ALSO THERE HAS BEEN SOME CAR DAMAGE DONE BY IDIOTS ON CAR PARKS NEARER THE FORT.
HOPE THIS IS OF SOME HELP.

Sunday, fished Landguard. Arrived about an hour after HT and found plenty on the beach. Very bright, mild and sea flat calm (too calm?). Most seemed to be catching fairly small whiting. Lots of activity with small whiting trying to steal the bait. Everyone had left by 16.00 and beach to myself. Better fish after dark. Some very good bites but didn't come to anything! Lug or lug and squid out fished squid on its own. Thought about fishing some of the flood as a little bit more wave got up and looked more promising but ran out of bait! Still no cod for me perhaps next week!

Forgot to say I caught half a dozen whiting and a Dab. Lots of bites but I was using fairly large hooks and bait to try and find some better fish.

Sounds like it was the wrong time of day, what time did you start?
I have always said Felixstowe fishes better at night and start about 3hrs before High water.
Next sunday starting at about 1730 is looking a good time to start. I cant go then but will be going Mon 12th as high tide is about 2100hrs I think.
Did you find manor Car Park?
