My heart goes out to this person's family,
Some time last week a young angler was fishing birnbeck pier when a freak wave washed him off the pier and his body has yet to found
my thoughts go out to his friends and family at this sad time.
I know how dangerous the bristol channel can be,but a freak wave washing someone away.

This just goes to show how dangerous the sea can be at times.
With martial arts you are taught to be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Fishing should be treated in the same way, as the sea can be very unpredictable at times.
I was recently fishing by a chap at Clevedon who was hit by a freak wave that threw a large plastic barrel at him. It broke his tripod and the sea washed some of his kit out to sea. If the barrel had hit him it could of been a different story.

I honestly do believe some people do respect the sea enough. I cannot swim and fish a lot by myself. Around the BC i am always ultra cautious what i am doing. I have a good floatation suit just in case. I always do a mental risk assessment of what i am doing and do not let anything compromise this. I am happy to loose a rig and weight etc that is caught in the weed on the drop off at battery point rather then standing on the edge of the slippery rocks trying desperately to free - it just aint worth it.
I have been fishing in PLymouth around west hoe pier by myself with a big spring tide and gusty winds. As soon as the waves were washing a bit over the pier edge that was it pack up and leave.
Never take chances people.
cheers

| its a hard fact fo life that however careful we are and however competent we all think we are shit just sometimes happens. no one could say that trawler men are blase about the enviroment they operate in but some are lost every year. its just sad when this does happen and my heart goes out to the guys family |

| For years I stressed to my mates that go out on my boat, that the sea is a dangerous playground. If I see white horses on the water I don't sail. Call me a wimp if you must but I only got caught out once in a force six in a 14ft dijhon. I always call up the coastguard on the radio for an uptodate weather report. |

| thats really bad, and his family must be devastated. So im going to tell you 2 tales as quick as i can. One day fishing Filey Brigg I had a very lucky escape, I had gone round by the escape ladders, the tide was almost out, only 20 mins or so to go. I took a look at the rock mark i usually use, and there was just a splash as the waves came in, not very big ones i might add, i watched it for a few minutes while waiting for my companions to catch up. Having checked it out, i jumped down off the first ledge, about 6 and a half feet, got my rods and rucksack down etc, turned roun d to pick it all up and saw a wall of water coming right over me, i dropped the rucksack, grabbed the ledge and hugged the rockface so the water couldnt get in front of me, I knew if it did, the force of it going back out would take me with it. Well after a lifetime under water, it went out again, my gear had gone, but i was still there to tell the tale. the wave had reached the ladders, over 20ft from sea level. Second, a guy was fishing the wall at scarborough, and a freak gust of wind sent him straight off into the sea, he was lucky it was only windy, and had his mates to help him out again, so its not just waves that are dangerous and unpredictable. so take care out there, i learned the hard way. |

My heart also goes out to this person's family, this brings home just how much we should respect mother nature and the power of the sea. |
