I wonder if anybody can offer any tips for next Saturday (26th). Am going first thing on Saturday morning. Was thinking of Layde bay or just round the corner from Battery point. Is the Portishead pier worth a crack?
Other than that I am open to suggestion. I know its just under 12m tide which early in the morning should be a good one! Ha!
I fished Layde bay twice over Christmas/New year with 2 baby codling to my name I am hoping for one for the pot!!! happy On both occaisions the bait was bigger that the fish!!!! Both on a clipped down pennel pulley.
I live in Weston super mud and don't really want to be lugging my gear miles. However, travelling to a mark is not really an issue. Bait and tactics would be muchly appreciated!
I will be trying to get some Lug, Rag and Squid sorted as bait...
Cheers and tight lines to all!

Sorry can't really help as I havn't heard of much being caught at the moment. The baits you are taking are the right ones to have but I have tried them all further upstream and only had a small codling.

Hope you have a good session, I might try and get down that way myself on Saturday, missus & weather permitting.
cool

I would stay away from Portishead Pier and Battery, the upper channel is fishing very poor. I would head down clevedon way.

cheers

Thanks guys, I am thinking layde Bay may be the way forward.

Amazing with all the talk of the Cod returning in big numbers, this should in theory be a great time to be fishing the channel.... perhaps I am a pesimist, but I just can't see the evidence of a good cod season. It seems to be as bad as ever confused

Hi mrwobble are you still heading down Layde Bay Saturday morning?
I was thinking of heading down there for about 7ish maybe earlier.
I have never fished there before and wondered where is the best place to park?

Maybe see you down there.

Sorry crazy dude just seen your message. So, apologies...

I went down to Lady bay this morning. Fished 0700- 1200. My friend and I managed to catch 4 small, infact tiny codling between us.

We were fishing 3 rods, 1 at 100 + yds, 1 approx 80 yds and the other at around 50 yds ish.

Poor, to say the least.

We were fishing Rag, Lug, Squid and Peeler. Everything was right, but the cod were no where to be seen, neither were the whiting... crying crying

There was about 8 other people and they were finding the same as well.

As for parking the best thing to do is drive to the end of the road where you can turn around, then park soon after the path which would then be on your right. Walk down the path, turning right, follow the path along into and through the woods (about 400-500 yds) then it opens out. A well trodden path leads down to the rock ledges. Fairly nice and flat. Always seems to be a wind wipping up the channel though.

As for the best cod season in years.... hmm me is thinkin not!!!!

I think some milleage is going to me required before I get a cod for the pot!!!

I made it there today aswell fished from 6.30-3ish.
but fished the bay itself.
Had 1 small codling within 5 seconds of getting a rod in the water and then nothing for the rest of the day but was plagued by little fish nibbling on the baits.
crying
Met another chap down there who by the end of the day also had a small codling.
And we were joined in the day by 2 chaps who had a run of 4-5 small pout.
At least I didn't blank. applause
Next time I think I will try the pier.

I cannot believe how poor the BC is fishing - all the talk at the beginning of the season of bumper cod, they better hurry up or the season will be over.

Will let you know lee.
Thought you might like to know. I spoke to Roger at Forest tackle exchange in Lydney. Hopefully we have a local supply of lug.
He said as long as it is ordered by Thursday at the latest he can get a delivery in for Friday.
The minimum order is 1lb for £16.
I know its a bit expensive compared to tackle shops on the coast but its a lot cheaper than having them delivered to your home address mail order.
Gonna try them for my trip to Aust will let you know what they are like.
Have fun in Devon.
