How long is a piece of string mate and which casting style are you going to do? Personally, I do a modified version of OTG style with a Shakespeare Salt Beach (light and easy to use) - they are made with a decent thickness of carbon fibre and go for well under £100. On a good day I can do 150 yds which is all I need to do in my neck of the woods, in fact I catch a lot of stuff much closer in than that. I am just pointing out that you don't need to spend a lot of money to catch fish and I don't know anyone who feels the need to cast 200 yds in the Solent area in order to get bites.

If you cant bend it dont spend it- seriously- get yourself some casting lessons or join a casting club- get your technique right and you'll get distance- then start thinking about looking at more powerful rods if you're looking at big distances- expensive rods wont get the distance for you- the Daiwa Supercast is a perfect rod for learning and developing technique and will get you the distance you need for fishing as well.

On the other hand if you're intent on a Zziplex etc some of them are real scaffolding poles and only really useful for tournament casting- although some are also very good fishing rods - it depends what you want really and the type of ground you're fishing.

Best to try as many as you can that fit your casting style and type of fishing and then decide befoer you splash out to be honest

I'd second that for the Daiwa Supercast. I have one and it's a good rod for getting the practice in before looking at the pokier end of the market. My best on the field with it is 170yards on a good day with a following wind and a 5oz lead. Average is 150yards consistently. It's also quite forgiving and will not tear your arms out of their sockets if you get it wrong! Bite detection is good and it doesn't suffer too much with that waggling about thing in the wind. Downside is that I've found the best position for the reel is down-really, really down. This gives a bit of difficulty with the retrieve as the reel handle tends to be somewhere in your groin-in my case it's not so much cranking it as being able to see it over my belly! big grin big grin Solved that one by making an extension piece. It's a bit heath but it works.

it depends mate any beach caster is good but if you want to pay that little bit extra then yeah get a name brand but i dont bother i just test cast in a field with a good weight on the end something like 4oz you usually get 200 yards no probs hope this helps
ps i got a few rods all different makes they all do the same thing cast easy 200 yards and catch fish when there is some about

after reading the review by eccles on the homepage and speaking to AD aka Rag i deided to get the salt mx and it sure hell is a lot of rod for very little money , comes free with coasters and a 40mm reducer and hitting distance is very easy , i would of excepted to pay more than i did i got mine for 54.99 plus 10 postage and i had top of the range rods and can say the salt does the same job , i got a conoflex enigma south o a friend as he took up freshwater so sold it to me or 50pounds and it was a lovely rod but the salt really does stand up well to the higher price range rods.

I wish I had taken the advice offered ie casting lessons before spending money that I didn't have to. A word from the wise take notice from the old hands and invest in lessons, they will do you more good than a new rod. Hope this helps, big grin big grin big grin big grin
