Sorry lads, more questions lol.
With crab baits, it is possible to keep hard backs
until they become peelers, in captivaty ?
I understand a fair bit about aquariums, so would
have no problem setting something up to keep the crabs alive
but am wondering if its possible, or even worth it ?
Does anyone do this them selves ?
I have no problem catching 20 odd fist
sized crabs in my pot, when fishing pagham
but there always hard shelled, and not peelers.
Are they worth using if not peeling ? Does anyone use them ?
I use this type of pot (here full of local cray fish)
and get a few good sized prawns too, which I have been trrying
as a bait as well, to not much success yet.
Cheers fpr the link, I've seen that, but was just hoping for
some extra tips from people who do it.
I seem to get crabs every time I put the pot in, best near rocks, but also get them on the beach by just throwing it 10 foot into the water.
I bait if up with last weeks left over baits, which I mix with veg oil
after a session, then leave in the fridge till the next session, where its gone a bit pongy normally.
Fill the bait pouch, and pour a bit of extra oil mixed with old fish parts onto the pot its self, and leave in the water for an hour.
The only place I havent got crabs is off brighton marina wall, where I
just got a lot of small rock cod.
But down at pagham I always get about 20 small crabs and 5 or so good sized shrimp.
I get mainly the green crabs, but have had swimming crabs, and brown crabs too.
This time I'll bring some how, and try to bring them on to peel.

Ah right so you use a very small piece of bait I take it?
We been using 2 - 3 Mackerel heads
When we used whole Mackerel we got 2 dogfish in under 15 minutes

Why not fish hardbacks mate? I have opened up plenty of bass with small hardbacks in their guts - usually about the size of a £2 coin. Having said that, have never tried meself. Most of our bigger bass have been taken with mackerel fillet, worm or squid. My mate's PB bass (8 lb) taken a couple of months ago, had two quite hefty squid in its gut (possibly pinched from an angler?? LOL)
