if you want to catch lots of bass then East portlemouth is the best place i have fished use 2 rods one with lugworm and/or ragworm for smaller fish and the other with sandeel for the bigger fish. hopes nose is a great place to fish but you have to get through the crowds try long quarry point instead same species as hopes nose. you get lots of mackerel and garfish spinning and on the bottom you can get depending on the time of year:
wrasse, pollack, dogfish, cod, whiting, conger and smoothhound. well thats what i have seen caught off there |

I have never met Hope so do not know what his nose is like - if it's big and beaky I would stay away LOL. Anyway, used to live in Exmouth and cast lures across the channel around low water - had many a decent bass there. My theory was that when the estuary dries out, the bass have to come back down river and hang around until the tide starts to come in again; anyway it worked! Tie a 5 or 6 inch rubber eel on an 18 inch snood, have a 1 oz or there about drilled bullet in front of it to give you some casting distance then use a light (10 ft?) rod to chuck it straight across the channel from the concrete slipway at low water. Do the usual sink and draw action and wait for that take - very exciting fishing method cos they really wack that lure when they take it. I suppose you could try poppers there too but I never did. |

budleigh salterton would be a good bet for a nice bass this time of year. make sure you fish by the river. live pout or mackerel head for a large bass. |
