hi all,
To introduce myself :
I am currently a student in Brighton and am hoping to do some fishing off the pier at Brighton Mariner where i am on a live aboard MV.
I am looking for some advice from those in the know as i am a serious amateur when it comes to fishing! I have done a little river fishing in Bedfordshire but this has been really minimal.
Basically i plan to eat what i catch and live a cheap but healthy student life. Problem is i am pretty poor and am after an all round rod and reel - not expensive in case i drop it/stolen but versatile enough to take come what may on the line and not break on me. User friendly, versatile, cheap. Any advice would be much appreciated...
Also licences for sea fishing : a necessity? are they pricey?
Well hope you can help as am looking forward to getting into this while in Brighton.
thanks, ted |

Hi Ted welcome to the site, a licence is not required for Sea fishing in the UK, as for your rod/reel deal well there are so many tackle companies over the net or maybe lets not forget the local tackle shops your local tackle shop would be a good first choice and they can personally give you first hand advise on varius deals and local venue advise
Good luck
Cheers

Hi Ted,
I've fished the Marina wall a number of times and taken bass on Rag worm and squid, you can also try float fishing shrimp live is best and a very effective method in Brighton. Other fish in the Marina are Mullet, fish for them in much the same way as fresh water using bread / luncheon meat, they are hard to catch sometimes. For eating it's the Bass but if you have ever ordered cod in a chinese takaway you may have eaten Mullet already.
Good luck with the fishing and your studies.

Cheers Simon that gives me a good fighting chance getting the bait right. If you know of any fish in the area that are not a good idea to eat for taste reasons or whatever let me know. There are ones right in the inner harbour that might be mullet that have got trapped. might try those...
mrix, thanks for licence info. think your right, i'll try the local tackle shop and see what they think. there are rods on ebay like the shakespeare beachcaster but i think i should chat with people about it rather than buying into something i know nothing about.
enjoy, everyone.
best, ted |
