Hi all

I'm looking to get a new rod so that i can start pendulum casting. I currently have and old but in good condition Abu Ambassador Elite 13ft rod. This i have found is an excellent rod but is a bit tougher than most and i have trouble when pendulum casting. I don't think it is my technique i think it is more the rod as it is a great off the ground rod but i just want to start getting that extra bit of distance.

I'd like to know if any of you lot know of any not too expensive 13ft + rods out there that will be good for pendulum casting. Of course i want to get a Zziplex eventually but just can't afford that at the mo. I'm looking at around the £100-150 mark for this rod so any suggestions would be great

Cheers

I've got a Daiwa Supercast. Nice rod. Good caster. £120-£150 depending on where you look.

don't think it matters what rod you have for pendulum casting.I've seen people (or person :-) ) pendulum my old shakespeare crappo rod 120 yards at least.

Learn the technique first and then decide which rod you want / can bend

Don't know whether this will help mate but we had a casting session with Neil Mackellow (former world champ) earlier this year and he reckons a lot of modern rods are a bit too stiff for pendulum. Can't recall now what rods he was using (sorry). Why do you want to get out further anyway - I can chuck my Shakespeare 12 ft Salt 140 yds or so on a good day with a FS reel and that is enough to get you into cod/plaice territory on most beaches (using my modified OTG style). Even so, bass/whiting/smuts/others are usually around 20 - 50 yds so distance cast not necessary. I had a chuck with a Greys GRX (can get them for £100) recently and was quite impressed (managed to do over 150 yds) but just a little too heavy and stiff for my liking so will be sticking with the Shakespeare Salt, I think they do a 13ft version for around £70 but you would have to try it.

Nothing wrong with the Elite. That will pendulum cast just fine.

Speaking of Neil mackellow- here is a question someone posed to him specifically about the rod you have-

I`ve received an Abu ambassador elite 13ft fishing rod for xmas. I prefer my reel at the bottom of the rod(an Abu 6500), casting pendulum style. I`m 20 years of age and but quite small and I can only cast about 150-170yds I just can`t seem to get any real distance. Is there anything I can do to improve my casting and what potential does my rod/reel combination have?

This is a pretty powerful rod you have here and you have to bend it to get a good distance with it. A low reel is best for a slow wind up type of cast rewuired to compress it. Slow down, get the lead to fly out during the compression so when you come to hit it for real the lead is out there and not too far behind ready to rip your arms off!

New here, so sorry this is a reply to an old post... I have an Abu Elite & it pendulum casts just fine. I can get 100yds+ out of it. It could probably go much further if used by a competition caster!
It is a powerful rod, & to get the best out of it you as the caster need to be able to put the power into it to get the best cast out of it.

I use a Daiwa 7HT on mine.

Do you want to sell the Ambassadeur elite, I have one and I'm looking to get another. Thanks Gary C Bristol.

try having a look at the daiwa super cast range, richard holgate and john holden reckon the daiwa STS12PM is on of the best rods to start pendulum casting with, but I have the 13 ft version and it can be a bit much to handle but im only 15 but the set up that does work for me when pendulum casting is the daiwa tdsb12m with the reel in the low postion and i have hit 130yds with that set up and im 15, but if you want to make your technique better, buy john holdens long distance casting 1 and 2, from www.johnholden.co.uk
