I am thinking of getting a 12 ft Daiwa Sandstorm Rod but someone told me that they are a bit stiff - particularly want to us it for distance casting. Can anyone who owns one tell me if the tip is a good "medium fast taper" and will get me out over 130 yds using OTG style? I usually cast 4 or 5 oz leads.

I've got two of the 13ft versions and I like them. Of course it's all personal taste and I dont have vast experience of rods having only started last year.

I don't believe I'm seeing this - Eccles investing in expensive kit !!

I haven't any idea on the Sandsorm, but Duncbooth5 has the Supercast which might also be worth considering.

The Sandstorm isn't as stiff as the Supercast.

Just look at the Daiwa prices, as the price goes up, the stiffer the rod.

If possible Eccles try and get a go with one. Ask in your local shop if they have any regular customers who use them.

Must say, I like the supercast and if I've got a bit of spare cash, I'll get another. Don't know about the sandstorm though-I'm just a pleb rather than a massively experienced angler Like Mr C!

Har har SR, you are right not to believe it, I happen to have won some Amazon vouchers and I thought I would have a decko at what they had - I really fancy a Shakespeare Salt Beach having seen one in a Tackle shop but for some strange reason Amazon do not stock it among all the Shakespeare Rods they do have. No, I would not spend me own pension money on an expensive rod - probably get told off by HID. One of these days you will be a pensioner and have to scrape along on bread and dripping and baked beans. Anyway, Concrete, you are right, I should go and have a look at one - are you suggesting that the tips are maybe not too stiff for me to manage a decent OTG cast? - No, I am not a complete wimp yet - spent the last week banging in fence spikes and a new fence so still fairly strong.

You can OTG with any rod, it just helps if the tip is a little stiffer to help pick the lead up a bit quicker. Look at the Sandstorm and a Supercast. Having cast the Supercast, I would say that it is quite a forgiving rod and if you are doing 150 yards OTG then it will be suitable for you. I can't comment on the Sandstorm as I haven't used one.

What you want to do eccles is pop down the local hardware store and buy one of those washing line poles, you know the thing, thick heavy, unbendable and about as balanced as a tank on one track - then you get yourself a ZZiplex sticker and plonk it on the bottom with a bit of shrink tube, a few rings and a shiney tip. It'll look just like an expensive pole at a fraction of the cost and it'll have better bite indication!

Went to tackle shop this afternoon to get a few bits: "No, we do not stock Diawa stuff sir!" Why not? "Their after sales service is poor and if you have a warranty problem with one of their rods, it can take weeks to get it sorted. So we took a decision a couple of years ago not to stock their stuff anymore." This information has finally made up my mind, I am going for the Shakespeare Salt Beach or Ron Thompson Carbostick. Thanks for your reply 2e0ikh but have now made up my mind.

The more likely reason for not stocking Daiwa gear is that with all the deals about they can't make as much money on the Daiwa stuff.
I know several tackle shop owners and their profit margin is better on the lower priced rods than on the really expensive ones.

Ok Concrete, you could be right but maybe not for my tackle shop cos he also stocks Greys and the higher priced Shakespeare stuff.
