hello all

new to the forum, new to sea fishing.

i have read some very usefuk info in this forum, but i still have some silly Q's

when do i fish, high tide or low tide or some where in between?

looking to fish 4 mackrel (but mayb still not in season) bass and garfish

i am looking to use a beach caster and a carp rod.

i have 28g and 40g dexter spinner for carp rod, and made up some 2,3 hook flapper rigs with size 2 and 0/2 hooks.

also i have heard i should replace the dexter lures ancor hooks to a single hook, is this right?

will be using mackel pieces on the rigs. also have some feathers for mackel, but doesnt seem late enougth as the water still cold and water isnt too clear.

have i got the right jest?

been once to marina, use lug worm and rag (rag scared me, i am used to maggots not some big ass worm with feet and pincers, dont think i will be useung them again in a hurry lol) but didnt catch anything, bait was taken, but mayb by the crab?

also is ther a way of catching the crap or lobster as i haveseen pics of a lobster being caught on the marina.

i was a keen couse and carp fisherman in my teens but havent done any fishing for 10 yrs now, i was suprised that i remembered how to tie a hook lol.

i hopefully will be going marina on sunday if the weather is good, only cause the girlfriend is coming otherwise i would go anyway happy.

so all and any advice would be appeciated, from bait size of hooks peg no. on west arm to anything mentioned above.

again many thanxs ppl

cant wait to cook the fish that i will hopefully catch this time, last time i bought a bass from ASDA and cook it at home sad not the same, want fresh WILD fish, know what i mean?

cheers happy fishing

hi Charlie,
The marina is a good place to cut your teeth. Most people fish "down the wall" there, litterally 2 or 3 feet away from the wall, so no casting is required. Rag is better than lug there, so be brave and face those pincers. If you use a 2 hook flapper with rag, you'll more than likely catch allsorts including bass.
As for the mackerel, the marina has a web site with weekly catch updates, so you can see if they are in yet.
For Bass, the earlier pegs are better, especially if float fishing live bait or prawns. And be aware that the bottom on the west arm is quite rough so be prepared for tackle losses. The East arm is alot sandier and quieter as many can't be bothered to walk that far, it also fishes just as well.
The marina fishes better around high tide, and low tide can be a waste of time, effort and energy.
Hope this helps a bit.
Matt

you can catch prawns in a kiddies fishing net in the rock pools along the cliff walks in rottingdean at low tide you may also find the odd peeler crab and small hardback crab wich large wrass/ bass take down the wall at the marina/ put in a bucket and half full of sea water with a clump of seaweed, you can also buy battery powerd small pumps to airate the water if keeping overnight.hope this helps, ps the mackerel are in all along the coast from shoreham to newhaven ,early morning say 5/7ish and night 6/9 ish in more numbers,on calm days there right upto the beach and you can see the ripples and jumping on the water also gar fish killing in frenzy.
