Hi all, i've only been fishing for a year, mainly off Eastney Beach, its been a good year, thoroughly enjoyed fishing after a hiatus of around 20 years or so. Just would like to hear of any good spots on the south coast and any tips on what baits to use etc. the furthest i've been from portsmouth is West witterings (in the summer) and Lee on solent. Any info would be gratefully received, thanks! |

Welcome m8,I normally hang my rods up for a while at this time of year.As you can tell by the reports it's a bit slow at the present time.but when it does pick up I fish a handfull of marks regulary Brighton marina,Town Quay,Shoreham and hayling. All of which fish differently at diffrent states of tide.Joining this forum will improve your knowledge of marks and when to fish them. All I can suggest is keep your eyes peeled on the south forum. If you see me post that I'am off for a session your welcome to tag along
HOPE THAT HELPS BUD DAZ |

Hi there, I think the first thing to understand is that it is far better to stick to one or two venues and "learn" them thoroughly rather thn dashing around everywhere and hoping. Thus for example, I have 5 or 6 spots that I know about as I have kept notes on weather conditions, state of the tide and fish caught at various times of the year and I rarely blank as a result. I note that you refer to Eastney and you may like to consider spending a few days there with ragworm at the end of February and into early March. Although not guaranteed, it is often possible to take a few plaice there by casting well out (100 yds or so) using a two hook clipped down rig with a few green and black beads on the snoods. I must say at this point that the water needs to be clear and calm and preferably on a bright sunny day for plaice hunting so don't bother if it's blowing half a gale. |

Thanks for the replys guys! Yeah i know fishing is pretty slack at this time of year (it was around this time of year i started up fishing again last year haha....lots of blanks!) i just cant put my rod away, i still love the challenge! I fish Eastney virtually everyweek and have learnt alot about the fish and tides and winds etc but i still want to learn more and checkout other venues as it will give me more scope in future. I fished Eastney last week and for the first time i had a southerly wind, straight off the sea, not a bite all night, is this usual at all? Also, is fishing for plaice only good in the daytime?
I'll keep checking out this site anyhows, its providing dividends already! |

Always fish for plaice at Eastney during the day. As Eccles mentioned clam sunny days seems to work better. Water clarity seems to be key at that beach. The only plaice i have seen caught at night was at the arcades at lee-on-solent
Just to add, heres a post when it gets a bit warmer http://sea-fishing.org/ftopicp-180958-.html#180958 some marks around Portsmouth |
