Nothing wrong with either and anyway most new tackle is just a improved or rehashed version of the old tackle. So long as it is serviceable and catches fish I'll use it! So far as rods and reels are concerned, rods have moved on a pace in the last 25 years - even if your not into the casting aspect, the old Cod fives and the like with their alloy butts are very much out-performed by the carbon and kevlar of the new stuff, simply on bite detection and lightness.
With reels I'm not so sure - some of the modern reels don't have the build quality you'd expect for the money, but the likes of the Millionaire and ABU 6500 have got much more reliable and easier to use because of new technology such as magnet breaking systems. That being said, the first 6000 series ABU came out in the 50s, and apart from speeding up the retrieve, adding magnets and a minor modification to the spool, they haven't fundamentally changed in all that time - I suppose quality will stand the test of time. |

Old, new;if it works for YOU then it's fine. The major difference is the material technology but that will not always make it better for the way that YOU fish. The important thing is that YOU are comfortable with it.
Notice a recurring theme here? Its about what you are comfortable with. My father in law has a set of golf clubs which are older than me and the blade type. Now, even the pros don't play with blades anymore but he's happy and still plays a round of golf better than me with all the new hollow back kit. |
