I've been down to Dungeness twice in the last 6 weeks in the hope of codling and caught dabs ,small bass and of course loads of whiting-so with good reports and advice to go after dark i set off hoping for a breakthrough.Reports in 'Micks bait shop' in Hythe were of plenty large codling ( to 8-9lbs) being caught and the advice was to walk along from the point to the 'diamonds'.'Thought every thing was in place  ,well no codling could i catch and had to make do with the small bass ,dabs and more whiting (all returned!).Truth is the wind prevented a relatively inexperience angler such as myself getting the distance needed-should have known that something was wrong when not one single angler could be seen on the beach  - last time i was there i saw at least fifty anglers on the point alone ,looking like some medieval beach defence dads army- pikes pointing frenchward! Wish i had the time to get down there this week when the wind dies off a bit -any way happy days!

Dont believe all the report's you get from tackle shops, most of the time they will tell you anything to sell you bait, maybe next time you should try and speak to people that fish there, or the anglers on the beach, you will find out what's really being caught then.

You're surely correct in you're advice but i have to say as some one who lives away from the coast i have to rely on the news i can get -be it sea fishing .org ,Sea Angler mag or personal testament gleaned on the way ,even from a bait shop customer  !(could have been under cover trying to get me to part with a coupler of extra spondulics for an exra score of lug ).Any way -still wish i could get the week off work and hit dungeness when the wind was more in a po boys favour and try and get me a cod-bet i could if i had the time! Me i'm off to measure twice and cut once Cheers
