Don't really know what i'm talking about but...where could I find a nice slim sandeel imitation I could use? Not sure if I'd need a colourful or a dark one..Will be using it on the surface and just under.

Looking to get one in a size 4 hook... I won't be SWFFing with it...just playing around with a bubble float , hopefully for gars. Thanks

Plastic eddystone eels are the best thing to use under a bubble float, they have a little wiggly tail.

Right, you have a few options here.....

Redgills, Eddystone holographic eels, or if you realy want a battle get some Clouser minnow flies tied on size 4 saltwater hooks.

The plastics you will get in any tackle shop, the Clouser minnows you can find on ebay. I buy mine from Texas!

Hi. thanks for the replies. I've got a tidy selection of soft plastic/rubber eels. Eddysone and redgill but I think they are too big for gars..I mean..i'd probably get one in the end but I'd rather up my chances. I see the eels more of a lure for bass & pollock (most the hooks being 1/0-3/0)

After having a look around I think I should go lower than a size 4. Prehaps a 10 or a 12 even. Possibly use carp hooks...think it will be hard to find salt water hooks that size? Been looking at the clousers, deceivers(?), Woolly Buggers. Have read that I'd do best with a 3cm~ fly.

As has been said..I'm going to be playing around with a float (ie NOT on a fly rod). Has anyone had any luck on the above patterns? Any particular colours or prehaps i'm best of working that out myself? Thanks

By all means try the flies.....however these work for fly anglers because of the Sharp pulls we give on the fly line to retrieve. If you just reel it in without imparting any action into them, they are less likely to work.
Good luck and tight lines.

Use the Sidewinder shimmer eels with the offset Owner jig hooks, they look the real deal and are great for macky. Not seen Gars up here to try them on but I bet they,ll be good.

Redgills, eddystones usually used by retrieving though aswell aren't they? I've got my methods but thanks for you're concern regardless. Slow retrieve on a bubble float with a long snood / let the tide run work it under the bubble like I use the eels(Still not caught like this but feel confident)

I've got one of the shimmer eels and not particulary impressed. The holographic strip looks a bit fancy but the action of it..i'm not so sure about. As i've said..need something smaller than an eel to maximise my chance of hook ups which is why i'm looking at flys.

Thanks for the information anyway guys... bit late to be trying for them now I think (still haven't had a single macky!) but will let you know if I manage one...even if it is next year waiting Thanks again
