Hi, been fishing around Portstewart now for a while.. caught a nice wrasse using ragworm last weekend. I've been fishing by Harbour Hill, opposite Carrick Dhu caravan park and round the back of the convent.. Could anyone please advise me of any other notable marks?? happy

well cholla i fish portstewart reguarly and harbour hill, behind the convent r the best marks espeacially behind the convent it always produces the most fish, theres also the pier at the end of the strand, and the black rock on the portstewart road beside the old golf course but its a abit of a tackle graveyard. thats really it round portstewart, if u check on down ive a couple of reports on portstewat, that was all behind convent. hope that helps.

Cheers John, fished by Harbour Hill yesterday an hour each side of low tide with good results.. Caught 3 wee coalies and my 1st doggie big grin big grin.. I was using sandeels but I'm gonna get some rags today and should catch high tide at lunch time and low tide this evening.. Hoping for similar results.. Still buzzing from yesterday lol.. Haven't tried the pier by the strand yet so might go there today for a change!!!!! happy

wow.. fished Sat afternoon high tide behind the convent.. totally blanked but i think it was maybe too bright for the fish tho i did see a conger swim past me which was pretty cool.. hit Harbour Hill again for low tide early on Sunday morning and had a great time.. my 1st rag found another doggie (i've been fishing 2 years but never caught 1 then 2 in 1 weekend big grin big grin ), then after losing a few worms i switched to spinning for a while. my 1st cast got me a nice wee coalie (app 1.5 lb) then i hooked something BIG.. i'll never know what it was but it managed to pull my swivel open and steal my spinner so if anyone catches a big fish with a yellow spinner hooked in it i'd like it back please!!!.. after this excitement i switched back to the rags and caught 2 wrasse.. All in all i'd a brill few hours on the rocks.. i've heard reports of mackeral being in but haven't seen them yet myself!!!!! happy big grin happy big grin cool

Thanks guys.. i'm happy its a good start for this summer.. Can anyone answer a wee query for me tho please.. What's the best way to handle a doggie??.. the 2 i caught at the weekend i successfully managed to return to the sea but it was a job as they kept trying to bite me (can't blame them for that).. would it hurt to get bit by them??

One hand over it's head and one one it's tail. Taking hook out hold it's tail between your knees or lightly under your foot a hand holdind is head and take the hook out. My bull Huss took my skin off when we were weighing it. Hope this helps you.

Hi Cholla

Try holding them by the head, bring the tail upsides the head and hold both with one hand. It stops the fish moving and this leaves your other hand free to extract the hook.

hi cholla

agree with stewarty there. also if you are targeting doggies then circle hooks are a good choice of hook. doggies sometimes swallow the hook and a cirle eliminates this hooking them neatly in the lip or sissors pretty much every time.
