Idle bugger, wasn't he. Anyway as you broke your ankle falling off your chair laughing at my joke, you can't fish now anyway
Try this.
Make sure that the sinker is holding bottom and then tighten down on the reel just enough to make the rod tip bend a little and rocks as opposed to nods with the wave motion.
If it suddenly straightens up and stays vertical, you have what is known as a slack line bite. The fish has taken the bait and released the sinker from the sea bed and hopefully hooked itself at the same time. Cod and Bass willl both do this.
Similarly a knock, knock, knock, on the rod tip usually means a fish not big enough to dislodge the sinker, Whiting or Pouting but is pulling on against it.
A straight downwards bend in the rod tip, often signifies a fair size flattie has taken the bait and has stopped as soon as it felt the hook.
A massive whack whack wahck usually signifies a Bass that is extremely angry that it cannot continue to hunt.
Other than that can't help much
Tight lines. |

Sorry for teaching grandpa to suck eggs. Tip lights can be obtained, try luminous tape at the top of the rod.

I sit with the line tagged on my finger. Tightend like edgey says, but that way I get a feel for what is happening at the other end.
I have learnt pretty much how to tell the difference between the sinker being dragged by the tide & bouncing off shingle & a bite. |

I know that m8. Made me laugh though. Am suffering today from trying to fish West Bex(Chesil). My own bloody fault. Mrs E kept telling me all the way home, " The surgeon said last Monday that technically you can walk without crutches and don't need the cast, but my advice is another 6 weeks". I have the bloody things for four and half months now!
Fed up. |
