In response to an earlier post requesting fishing reports - Fished the tide up today at Egypt point just by the public slipway but no luck what so ever. Not one bite. Didnt realise but its a bit snaggy out there and broken twice.
Used Macki and squid bombs on three hook flapper. Its a small tide and fairly calm with the temp about 5degrees.

Not my favourite area to fish but at least you tried.

I am fishing Sat & Sun this weekend, targeting flounder up the Medina with a new rig it is called the "flounder float rig".

All the best,

i was going to go down medina just down from the barrats homes on the outskirts of east cowes but it was full of rubbish and was boggy, it then walked all the way up to the folly (i think) but terrible all the way up i sacked it and went of east cowes water front. where abouts do you fish from? its probably better when dry and not after a stormy session. confused

Maybe at Reed Beds or opposite Newport Rowing Club if not then down at the Barrat homes along from East Cowes Vics or down the side of the Church.

The river colour is very muddy at the mo with all the rain that we have been having.

Im going to try to locate those places on the medina and give it a try but can I ask what sort of tackle one might use. Ive not fished a tidel river before but do a lot of fresh water fishing as well as sea fishing. Do you use beach casters, 15lb line etc or maybe a light bass rod?

Mant thanks

You can use whatever rod you want but I fish with a Sonik Bass & Greys BZE Bass rod, nice and light with Abu Cardinal 104r Spinning Reels loaded with 15lb Daiwa Tournament. This makes for a good bit of sport if you hook a good sized Bass. I use the smallest weight possible to hold bottom, so anything from 2oz flat leads through to the odd grip weight has been known in the past but normally it's just a 4/5oz flat lead if want a bit more distance.

Rigs made from 40lb clear Amnesia (Main Body) and Hook lengths 20/25lb clear Amnesia. Boom, Flapper or Running Ledger setups are fine with size 1 or 2 Sakuma Hooks.

All the best,

i think you will be only likely to get a flounder or other small fish around this time of year so you could probably go as light as you like for a bit more of fight, im a poet and dont know it... big grin

Flounder will be the more common catch this time of year, maybe the odd Bass and Plaice but there are not many fish being caught around the island at the mo (source scotties tackle) although in the West Wight club match (21st Feb) a nice 5lb Bass won it, only fish weighed in from 33 anglers and caught from St Helens.

Strange how the fishing is poor all around the Island, I wonder why? is it normal, bad winter etc?

Up t' North we would expect the cod(ling) and whiteting to come zooming in and indeed have had quite good results on the Yorkshire coast since Christams. Bloody cold tho'! I recall one day we we're clad in our flotation suits fishing the 'wall' Bridlington with the waves comeing over our heads when a 'tourist' dressed only in a light coat walked to the end for a look into the 'deep' when one caught him by suprise and soaked him through the the skin. Laugh? I thought he'd never start!!!!

Thanks all - Ill be retuning Northwards next week but will return end march and will keep watching the forum meanwhile
