Hi there folks,
I have been using fixed spool reels but am looking at trying a multiplier. Are multipliers just for boat fishing or can they be used for shore/beach fishing as well. has anyone gotr any ideas on what im looking for in a shore multiplier. Do you need a certain rod.

Any help or advice will be welcome

thanks devil

First of all multipliers are designed for both shore and boat fishing, some will even do both jobs. for shore work any of the small Abu's or Penn reels.

2 reels that will do both are the Abu7000 and the 7,500i

Dont use a fixed spool on a mulitplier rod but its OK to do it the other way round ie multiplier on a fixed spool rod.

Hi Keith............got a question, Iv'e seen an advert for a Abu 7000i and it is described as a "left hand" surely most Multipliers are left handed anyway ????? I mean when you are on the retrieve ie reeling in, the rod is rings up and you are winding with your left hand .............am I correct ?? or have I read / understood it incorrectly??

Most multipliers are right handed ie rings up and handle are on he right.
I have 2 of the 7,500's and they are far better than any other multiplier I have used.

I have over 40 reels (OK I know one pair of hands ect ) lol, but for shore fishing and dingy fishing I wouldn't be without them.
Cheers

Okay thanks Keith, one more question are you right or left handed ??, I am right handed and it seems natural for me to be winding with my left hand, almost automatic infact..............how about you ??? also the reel in question ie Abu 7000i is priced @ £114 is this in your opinion reasonable ??.

I have had a look at some of the adds and they can be quite confusing , The reels that I have are the same size as the old red 7,000s but hav now got brass sideplates and are chromed, This makes the reel sligtly heavier but resists saltwater better. I am right handed and wind in with my rifgt hand,
Cheers keith. big grin big grin

Ps I paid £154 each for mine 12 months ago

I wind with my left hand too joli. I find changing hands awkward. There is a LH version of the Abu - 7001, if we're talking about the level wind version. But it seems the beach casters only come in RH, one reason why I'll be sticking with FS reels. The 7001s come up on ebay fairly often and tend to go for £70 - £80, if I remember correctly.

A question for Rabbi2

When you say you can use a multiplier on a fixed spool rod, i thought that both types of rod were only supposed to bend in one direction (for casting). What i mean is, when casting a multiplier ringed rod with a multiplier the rings are in the up position. When casting with a fixed spool on a fixed spool rod the rings are on the bottom. Are rods designed nowadays to cast both ways or are they designed only to cast a certain way.
i hope i have asked the question in a way you understand because i know what i want to ask but dont know if you will understand what i mean.

Perhaps I can answer that. Rods will bend in any direction; they are more or less symmetric. Sometimes a rod is ringed to correct a slight natural bend, though this effect is probably slight in a big rod.

Multiplier rods just have smaller butt rings than FS, because of the way the line comes off the respective reels. Distance from reel is different too.

multiplier rods normaly have 8 rings plus tip, fixed spool normaly 4 or 5 plus tip. if you use multipliers on fixed spool rods the line will rub on the blank, hence moore rings on multi rods, allso using fixed spool on multi rods can corse crackoffs as line can wrap aroun the but ring as it is usualy a lot smaller on multi rods thats why rods are sold for multiplier or fixed spool. hope this helps, cheers ian.

if you are looking at the abu 7000's also look at the fladen maxximuss.. i bought a 7700 for around 60 quid, and have fond out that it is essentially an abu 7500i with a different badge

what I would also like to add is that if you are thinking of changing to a multipliier is, dont spend a lot of money, rather get an entry level multi.....or better still, borrow one off a mate.. you might not like using one and then you've shelled out £130 for something you are only gona use for the occasional boat trip.

I decided to give it a try as I was told by a lot of people that a multiplier is better. I now dissagree, I got myself a decent fixed spool (which is entirey different to a budget version in lots of ways) and I can (and will) argue till I'm, blue in the face as to why it is as good if not better than my multiplier.

obviously there are arguments 'for' a multiplier that are as valid, but in my opinion you cant go wrong with a fixed spool.. so look before you leep and dont go all out for a flash expensive piece of kit untill you know you prefere it...

rant over !! lol

G big hug raham
