Has anyone been able to get out at all? Where I live we get very little snow but all the roads are like skateing rinks which would make trying to get out suicidal. Most of my local marks are shallow storm beaches which dont fish well in the current bright/ calm conditions which makes me even less inclined to venture out and I dont fancy my chances driving home after an evening session on the deepwater rock marks. |

Good luck in the competition tomorrow, I fished in a few when I moved to Clare, its a good way of meeting other anglers, seeing new tackle and seeing what methods others are using.
I didnt do too many as match fishing isnt my thing, I didnt like being told where to fish or only using one rod. |

cheers,
one of the reasons i joined was to try and meet a few people. none of my friends have any interest and theres only so much i can learn from sites like this and by myself. hopefully this time next year ill be planning on trying to win a comp, not just entering one to see how others do things |

You never can tell about the winning Red, you could pull the lucky peg.
The club I fished with was the Lisdoonvarna and Fanore, most of the competitions were on rock marks and most of them are won by the auld fellas who are in no rush to change methods, they just lob out half a mackerel and wait for the conger, you have to catch a lot of dogs to beat one 10 kilo conger!!
I still go to most of the comps for the craic and to see how those marks are fishing, I just choose not to compete.
Judging by your reports last year you dont need too much help anymore and it was great to watch your posts go from 'where can I catch' to 'look at this great session I had last night'. Well done for sticking with it. |

Looks as though there is a bit of a thaw on today.
Main roads round here are okay, but getting to them.........
Anywhere I like to fish, Browns Bay/Portmuck area would prob involve a downhill sled run, so I havent tried. (Cant afford to bang another car).
How did the comp go Red?

ha ha, cheers but thats only cos i dont post the blanks........and ive found a good Bass beach thats very underfished so that was a help too.
as for the comp, well, i BLANKED but so did a good few others. i was peg 16 and most fish were in the earlier pegs. sayin that the guy next to me on 15 had 5 codling but he was casting out 80yards further than me. a top Irish international was a few pegs further down and also blanked so i didnt feel too bad.
the snow started an hour into it but odly it didnt feel too cold. the hill out of the place was unreal. skidding all over the place. some guy came out of a house and started flinging gravel from his garden all over the road with a shovel and slowly we started getting up it. it took an hour to get there from my house and 2h 30m to get home.
good day out tho. lookin forward to the next one already, hopefully i wont have to hand in a blank card this time tho |

hi red
good post, dont worry about the blank youll see every angler in the club have them, but you stuck at it until the very end and your attitude for match angling is spot on,meeting new anglers, learning new tatics, rigs etc and i like the goal you set by winning a comp in the near future,a very positive way of thinking ....the venue today was very peggy as you rightly point out,the luck of the draw sometimes,if there aint no fish in front of ya there aint nothing you can do about it.delighted to hear your looking forward to the next one, should be much more even.stick at it and the results will follow, its so true what you say theres only so much you can learn from a site and fishing on your own,(ive been there)when you look back this time next year youll find that youve learned more in the last year with the club than you would in the previous five on your own.as you know the club has the two irish captains (world shore and home international) in its ranks as well as previous internationals, munster champions and munster provincial anglers, so the standard is high a bit daunting, but these are the guys who will make all of us in the club better anglers..suffice to say well done today and hope you come second in the next comp as long as i win |

cheers sean, it was a bit tounge in cheek about winning one , some hope after seeing some of the other anglers today. i can live in hope tho. i fished that spot last year a few times and always had a few fish. usually a few doggies and small strap congers knockin about but no sign of them today.
had ye any hassle getting up the hill? lee was up ahead of me having fierce trouble, i was stopped waiting for him to move when i saw neil and jp sliding past me. dont think id have gotten up only for the guy putting out the gravel. |

hi red
no problem getting out, 4 wheel drive the only way to go pal !a few of the lads looked liked they should have entered dancing on ice...my driver today was paudie o drisccoll who is a professional driver,a top angler and all round good egg... and stop the tongue in cheek nonsense, a win is deff a realistic goal.... oh by the way did i mention as an ageing leeds fan we beat man utd last wknd o does it get any better |
