I have 2 boat rods free to good home, both rods are old but quite serviceable and are about 30lb class. They would suit beginner to boat fishing as they have been well looked after.
Whoever wants them must either collect them either at my home or arrange to collect them at a meet so that I can put them in the car.
Cheers

In the same vane i.e 'Bunce' rods , a while back I think in June whilst on a trip to our local Corporation rubbish tip with a mate dumping his old gas boiler, we spotted a pile of old fishing rods just about to be crushed!!! there was about a dozen of them Match rods, Carp rods and one Beach caster.................my mate took the match rods and I took two Carp and the Beachcaster rod they were circa 1960-70 all quite tired and unloved and were being dumped because we believe a 'House Clearance' operator just wanted rid !!!!..........................., anyway to cut a long story short I finished both Carp rods restored them in September and am well pleased with them I use them now for 'feathering' at a cost of......... well too much !!!!!! but they were a project and I got a lot of pleasure from them.
The Beach caster.............it is a 'Gilfin' 13' fibreglass and a real beast !!!!!!! circa 1967 a right old 'broom handle but what a flex on it really whippy and do you know what it is really comfortable !!!!!!!! a mustard/old gold colour with red whippings and the old chrome wire rings no inserts.............okay!!!!!!!!!!!! with this awful weather I was going stir crazy and so started my new project ,yeah thats right the 'Gilfin' I'm halfway through it at the moment it is all stripped back and in the middle of having new rings whipped on with new black whippings...JOLI |

Its surprising that those who like me prefer a soft rod, don't even think of trying to get a fiberglass rod a they suit those of us who have a back problem or are unable to put power into their casts.
I think Gillfin went out in the 60s but not too sure.
Cheers

sounds very much like a rod my dads uncle had when I was a kid-it did look the dogs doo-dahs from what I recall.(I was using an old 8ft cane pier rod in those days)Any idea where the firm was based? I still use glass or composite rods as my right shoulder cant put the power into a cast anymore so dont think I could wind up some of the modern "beasts".Would love to see a picture of your restored Gilfin |

Hi Conga, pleased you are familiar with the company 'Gilfin', don't know where they were based exactly but the makers label describes " London England ", will try and upload a photo of the finished article in the future, lacking a suitable camera at the moment !!!!!.
It truly takes me back to when I began Sea fishing, a very solid substantual piece of kit, all the original rings have gone and have been replaced with 'Fuji' ones, I know it detracts from the original but i want a rod that I use rather than a pretty thing just to look at, anyway thanks for your interest all the best..................JOLI |

Have you used your restored "Gilfin" rod yet Joli? Would be very interested to hear how it stands up to the modern stuff in terms of casting/bite detection etc.All the best, Mick |

Hi Conga.................no not yet!!!!! the weather has been terrible and on top of that the fishing at this time of the year down here is a waste of time, Iv'e done my stint on the sharp end over the years and learnt my lesson so put my rods away for late DEC /JAN, it is just begining to start its 'up- turn' for a few weeks ,ie 2nd run, I hope to try it out within the next couple weeks, possibly on either Deal or Walton Pier. However, I hope to do a midweek trip to Southend Pier and will be using one of the light Carp rods I mentioned in the original posting which is nice and sensitive, suitable for 'Flattie banging'
All the best JOLI
P.S Just had a chat with my son he tells me he has a camera will try to up- load photo in the not too distant future !!!!! |
